Shake Roofs

Cedar Shake Roofs- In my opinion are one of the worst possible roofs that a person can get these days. The shakes that are now available are not usually thick and hearty like they used to be. That means that they weather, crack, curl and rot much faster than they may have in the past. They need lots of attention when it comes to maintenance too. Shakes dry out and crack when exposed to sun; it's ultraviolet rays and heat make short work of them. So they need to be protected with some sort of tinted treatment. Shake roofs need to be cleared of debris regularly too because wet leaves, wet pine needles or wet moss keeps the shakes wet and wet wood..... rots. So for this reason too shake roofs need regular cleaning and preservative treatment.

Shake roofs need not be pressure washed regularly in fact it is best to do it rarely if ever. Pressure washing can make shakes look nice and golden again but it does so by striping the old surface layer of wood away. Obviously then you wouldn't want to do it annually. A tinted wood treatment can be applied to a relatively clean roof without the need to pressure wash (check the specs if you will be picking out your own treatment). It may be possible to simply air blow or sweep the roof off if it is not covered in algae or moss.

Many people hold off until it is too late when it comes to maintaining their shake roof. We have come upon shake roofs only 8 years old that are almost worthless due to cracking or decay. It is wise to begin a maintenance program early on.
